Character Dinner Experience Opens at Resort’s Makahiki Restaurant

KO OLINA, Hawai‘i – Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa introduces “Menehune Mischief,” a lively dinner show at the resort’s Makahiki restaurant. Menehune Mischief celebrates the story of the Menehune—the magical little people of Hawaiian legend—with the help of Aulani Resort’s beloved Uncle and favorite Disney characters. The delightful tales are brought to life through enchanting music, sing-along fun and engaging storytelling—all while guests enjoy a delicious buffet dinner.

“Dining with characters is a signature experience at Disney Resorts around the world,” said Timothy Gustie, food and beverage director at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa. “Our guests have enjoyed starting their day with delicious food and Disney fun during breakfast at Makahiki. We are excited to offer a new twist for dinner at the restaurant with Menehune Mischief.”

The essence of Makahiki – The Bounty of the Islands can be found in the fresh, locally-sourced cuisine. The casual dinner buffet features line-caught sustainable seafood, rotating carving stations, Asian-inspired entrees, pastas, fresh salads and fruits, house-made desserts and a special “Keiki Corner” for youngsters.

In addition to the new dinner offering, Makahiki will continue to serve its daily breakfast buffet with family-friendly breakfast favorites, live entertainment and visits with Disney characters.

Makahiki — The Bounty of the Islands
This restaurant is named for the Makahiki season, the traditional Hawaiian celebration of the harvest. The interior of the restaurant showcases an abundant collection of art, from murals to glass sculptures. In the entry, artists Butch Helemano and James Rumford collaborated to convey the story of the Makahiki. Rumford sketched the designs and wrote texts for Helemano’s wood carvings that illustrate the sights and events of the Makahiki season. Also in the restaurant, native Hawaiian artists Al Lagunero and Solomon Enos collaborated on murals that depict feasting, ceremony and gaming. As the sun sets in the evening, the restaurant lighting gradually transitions from deep rose to hues of indigo—evoking a starry night sky.

Menehune Mischief is offered on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Dinner reservation times are 4:30 p.m., 4:45 p.m., and 5:00 p.m., with photo opportunities beginning at 4:45 p.m. The Menehune Mischief show begins at 5:15 p.m. The character dinner experience is $49 for adults and $24 for keiki (ages 3-9 years old).

For reservations, visit www.disneyaulani.com or call (808) 674-6200 for parties up to 10 guests. For larger groups, call (808) 674-6330. Show experience, menu items and pricing are subject to change.

During its 5th anniversary celebration, Hawaii’s top family beach resort unveiled plans for a new luau experience and special appearances by Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Moana”

KO OLINA, Hawaii (Aug. 28, 2016) – Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa today announced new, creative guest experiences that will debut later this year. The resort will introduce KA WA‘A, a luau at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa providing families with an enchanting dining experience and imaginative entertainment, and visits from Moana, Disney’s newest heroine.

The announcement was made as part of the resort’s fifth-anniversary celebration of offering unforgettable family vacations on the island of Oahu.

The exciting and inspiring KA WA‘A luau will open in November. Guests can feast on a sumptuous, local island buffet, and enjoy lively music and traditional Hawaiian dance, including hula kahiko and modern hula ‘auana. Through Disney’s signature storytelling, guests will experience Hawaii’s history and its deep cultural roots in canoe exploration—a voyage which brought Hawaiian ancestors to the beautiful ‘Ewa Loa plains surrounding Aulani Resort. Before the luau, guests can enjoy special pre-show entertainment, family activities, traditional crafts and more.

Also in November, as Walt Disney Animation Studios’ film “Moana” sails into theaters, Moana, herself, will arrive at Aulani Resort. The animated feature film is about an adventurous teenager who, with help from demigod Maui, sails out on a canoe for a daring mission to prove herself a master wayfinder and save her people. At Aulani Resort, Moana will join the resort’s beloved Uncle and Aunty as they visit with guests and recount tales of adventure.

“Combining immersive family experiences with the storytelling traditions of Hawaii has always been at the heart of what we do at Aulani Resort,” said Elliot Mills, Vice President of Hotel Operations for Disneyland Resort and Aulani Resort. “Going into our sixth year of operation, we’re excited to offer this next level of Disney entertainment and Hawaiian hospitality for guests from around the world.”

During its first five years, Aulani Resort was voted the No. 1 family beach resort in the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards. The Hawaiian destination provides world-class entertainment, a complimentary kids club, an award-winning spa, exceptional dining, breathtaking pools and more.

Bob Chapek, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, joined the Aulani Resort this week to present a $25,000 donation to Friends of Hokule‘a and Hawai‘iloa, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the perpetuation of canoe building and the preservation of this unique Hawaiian heritage. In addition, a one-sixth model of the Polynesian voyaging canoe—the Hokule‘a—debuted in the resort’s Maka‘ala Lobby. The model will serve as a visual reminder of Hawaii’s heritage of exploration. Aulani Resort’s connection with the iconic canoe reaches back to the early days of the resort, when Walt Disney Imagineers sailed on the Hokule‘a to gain inspiration for the resort’s design.
